Opportunities for people with disabilities

Inspired by the hosting of the Paralympic Games sailing and its medal successes, during 2013, the Trust worked with volunteers who were keen to establish a local Royal Yachting Association [RYA] recognised ‘Sailability’ group for Weymouth and Portland to enable people of all ages and any disability to get out on the water, to start to sail or to improve. The Trust raised funds and held those funds on behalf of the volunteers, prior to the establishment of a stand alone incorporated charity called Chesil Sailability. With its incorporation, the Chesil Trust has now passed over all funds held.

More information on Chesil Sailability can be found at www.chesilsailability.org.uk

The work of Chesil Sailability is inspirational and captured by the following quote from a participant.

“My face is a happy one too as I start with smile and out on the water with a instructor. When I got back, I was still smiling – the volunteers then got me back into my wheelchair safety with some jokes. I have decided that I will be taking this further and hope next year I will get to sail solo which is my quest!”

The Trust continues to support the work of Chesil Sailability, which we regard as a ‘sister’ organisation, although it is separate and independent charity.
